Purpose and overview

The purpose of the CE app is to provide detailed data of residual materials generated by local businesses on one hand, and to identify which businesses could use residual materials as a resource on the othe hand.

The app is organised in different two main sections:

  • A Dashboard allowing to filter data by material type, industry sectors and location, and to display associated residual materials production and resources needs
  • The Data Analysis area allows to display producers and takers on a map, slice and dice data by material, industry and location and to display individual business information. Although there could be many different ways of slicing and dicing data, some of the common use cases include:
    • filtering producers on a certain material type, and displaying takers for the same material type
    • zooming in an industrial precinct to get a understanding of all residual materials and all possible takers
    • using heatmap to locate larger producers of particular types of residual materials

Methodology

Data displayed in this app has been generated using a predictive model. The model is using actual wastes and resources data collected from a large number of businesses and industries to predict material flows for similar businesses. By definition, predicted data is unlikely to be an exact representation of the real world, and a prediction confidence level has been assigned to each business, ranging from 1 (low) to 5 (high). The model is improved on an-going basis by collecting additional data from the real world.

Low confidence prediction relates to businesses which size has been been extrapolated based on proxy data such as average business size for that industry, size of similar businesses in the area and/or land parcel size. These are typically smaller businesses which size is not readily available in open or purchased datasets. Medium and high confidence prediction relates to businesses which size was obtained from one or more direct data points (e.g. number of employees or revenue).

Once residual materials were predicted, the second stage was to identify potential takers for different types of residual materials. Takers were organised in two broad categories, ranging from known infrastructure such as sorting centers, to potential takers such as manufacturing businesses needing raw materials for their operations (cf. glossary for definition of existing takers vs potential takers).

Glossary of terms

Residual material

A residual material refers to the materials or by-products that remain after the completion of a manufacturing or production process. These materials are not the primary output or intended product of the manufacturing or production process but are generated as a consequence of it. Residual material is a broader term than waste, because not all residual materials end up as waste, as some can be reused or tranformed into secondary materials.

Residual material producer

In this circular economy app, a residual material producer refers to any business generating a significant amount of residual materials from their operations.

Resource

In the context of a business, a resource or raw material refers to the basic inputs or components that are used in the production of goods or services. These materials are essential for the functioning of the business and are transformed or combined during the manufacturing or production process to create the final products.

Taker

In the context of this circular economy app, a taker is a business for which one of the primary resource could be the residual material from other businesses. As an example, a wood particleboard manufacturer needs wood particles or fibers as a primary resource, and could reuse wood scrap or sawmills residues from other businesses. Takers have been organised in two categories: existing takers and potential takers.

Existing taker

Facilities currently receiving and processing waste and residual materials. The level of processing performed by existing facilities range from just sorting and redistributing materials (identified as Sorting Centers) to performing more advanced processing such as transforming and recycling materials.

Potential taker

Due to the nature of their business, these organisations could potentially substitute some of their raw materials input with recycled materials. It is unknown if they are currently using recycled materials for their production process, but they have been identified as good candidates for circular economy initiatives.

Industrial symbiosis

The primary goal of industrial symbiosis is to create a mutually beneficial relationship where one company's residual materials become valuable resources for another company, thereby minimising waste, reducing environmental impact, and increasing overall efficiency.
